Make sure you stick around for the giveaway at the end. A Silhouette Portrait is up for grabs!
Have you seen the new stamp kit available from Silhouette America? I’ve been playing with it recently and it is a lot of fun to create your own stamps. September 4-13, Silhouette has a promotion running for the stamping starter kit. You can also get a great deal on a Silhouette bundle with the stamping starter kit. Visit the special promotion page and use code CUTEFOX to get your discount.
To prepare for this promotion, Silhouette sent me a stamping start kit to play around with. My sister got married back in July and I thought it would be fun to make her an envelope seal with her new last initial. The stamping start kit comes with 10 exclusive stamping designs. I decided to modify one of those designs for my stamp. I’m going to walk you through the process so you can do the same thing. Before you begin working with the stamp kit, I highly recommend watching the short instructional video that comes in the kit. It’s only about 3 minutes but it is nice to see the whole process visually.
- After you have downloaded your free stamp shapes from the Silhouette store, open up the “stamping kit heart” shape. Make sure you have the shape selected, and ungroup the shape by pressing the ungroup button in the lower left of the screen. (See inset image)
- Now the shape is two separate pieces and you can delete the heart. Add in your letter of choice. It is recommended that each cut in the stamp material is at least 1/16″ apart, so I suggest picking a bold font. Also please note that letters with holes insides, such as A, O, and P will need some extra attention. For ease of use, you want the stamp to be in one piece. You can use a stencil font to avoid having to place the insides of letters individually or use the eraser tool to create breaks in the letters.
- At this point, I filled in my design so I could get a feel for what the stamp would look like. Now we are going to make sure both elements of our design are selected and hit the subtract button in the Modify window. This subtracts the letter shape from the circle, leaving us with only one object again. Now you can click over to the Cut Style Window(scissors with a red line) to make sure the cut lines look correct(Right image below).
- Almost time to cut. Go to the Page Tools Window and select ‘Stamp’ in the Cutting Mat box. The window should change to the size of the stamp mat and also display what the mat looks like. You can make any adjustments to the size or placement of your design now.
- Now we are ready to send the design to the Silhouette. Select ‘Stamp Material’ in the materials box. The settings will adjust to 18 thickness, and 1 speed. Also be sure to adjust your blade all the way up to a 9.
- Put the stamp material on the special stamping cutting mat. If you are using a Cameo, you will also need to adjust your roller down to the smallest setting.
- Cut your design, and remove the stamp material from the cutting mat. You may need to detach pieces of the material from your stamp. Just pull gently and it will break away cleanly.
- Apply the stamp to the acrylic stamp block that matches the most closely in size to your stamp. For text and letters, make sure apply the stamp in reverse. Your letters will be stamp backwards if you don’t!
- You are all set to stamp! Apply ink to the stamp and go to town.
Now my sister can use this on her Thank you notes, or really any mail she sends. I love that you can re-use stamps over and over again.
The stamping kit comes with black ink which I think is the most versatile. I had some other pigment ink pads, so I tried out a few other colors. I used cranberry, metallic purple, and a three tone green stamp pad.
Guess what? It’s giveaway time! I am giving away a Silhouette Portrait digital cutting machine. The giveaway runs from now until midnight on September 8. I will be announcing the winner on September 9. Good luck to all! All the giveaway details are in the rafflecopter form below.
