Silhouette Portrait giveaway ahead, stick around until the end!
It’s the second best time of the year. Silhouette Designer Edition is on sale for 40% off with code CUTEFOX! I use the special Designer Edition features, pretty much every time I open up my Silhouette Studio software. Today I’m going to show you how you can use custom fill patterns, an option only available in Designer Edition.
My niece is having her ‘Golden Birthday’ this year. Her birthday is on the 9th of the month, and she is turning 9 years old. She asked if I would design her a shirt with gold, pink, and hearts. Using the fill pattern options, I was able to create a proof of the shirt, so I could make sure it was perfect before I cut a thing.
First I’ll show you the proof that I created, then I’ll walk you through using your own fill patterns.
Cute shirt right? There are 9 different hearts, since she is turning 9 years old. All of the heart designs came from the Silhouette store. The shirt came from Target, and was the same style as this but it was short sleeves. I was only able to find a long sleeve shirt image online, so I went with that. The first step to creating your proof is to open the image in Silhouette and place your design on top, in the location you want it. Now I’ll walk you through using the fill patterns.
Using your Own Fill Patterns in Silhouette Studio Designer Edition
- Find or create an image you want to use for your fill pattern and save it to your computer. I found an image of pink glitter, to represent my pink glitter vinyl.
- Open up the Library in Silhouette Studio and go to the My Patterns folder.
- Drag your image(pink glitter) into Silhouette Studio and drop it in the My Patterns folder.
- To use your pattern, open the Fill Pattern Window.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom and find the My pattern section. Your image should be right there. Now you can use it to fill objects, like I filled the hearts.
Designer Edition also includes advanced options for pattern filling including: mirror patterns, rotate, scale, pan the pattern around within the filled image, and adjust the pattern’s level of transparency. I haven’t played with these options yet, I’m excited to use them more in the future.
Once you have your proof all designed, you can take a screen shot to save your image as a JPG file. I use a software called FastStone Capture to take my screen shots. If you hit Ctrl+Prt Scr it allows you to draw a box around what you want to capture. That way you don’t have to crop out any extra stuff later.
I got the go ahead on the shirt, so I cut out my heat transfer vinyl and made my niece her birthday shirt. Here’s her whole outfit completed.
My niece loves it, and I love that I was able to make her happy for her birthday.
Silhouette Designer edition has tons of features only available in the upgraded version. My favorite is the ability to use SVG files. It really opens up the possibilities to use your own files and files available on the internet. That feature alone is worth the cost of the software. Especially when it is 40% off! You can find the sale at http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/designer and make sure you use code CUTEFOX to get your discount.
Silhouette has some great deals on bundles too, if you haven’t purchased a machine yet. The bundle comes with Designer Edition and some fun glitter sketch pins.
Now for the giveaway. I’m giving away a Silhouette Portrait to one lucky person! The winner of the giveaway will be announced on February 10, so don’t miss your chance to enter. Good luck everyone!
