It’s the last week of school! I’ve been really struggling with a fun idea to give my kids teachers. Last week, I was a guest at Whole Foods Market in Paradise Valley for a Sun Care event and I got the perfect idea. Why not make a Summer Survival Kit for the teachers? I have several friends that are teachers and I know they get just as excited for summer break as the kids do. The great thing is that you can customize the kit however you want to fit their tastes and preferences.
Here’s a breakdown of everything I included in my kit:
- DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer
- Badger Sport Sunscreen Face Stick
- Goddess Garden SunnyFace Natural Sunscreen
- Inesscents Body Butter
- Nail polish
- Toe separators
- Granola bars
- Tumbler
- Puzzle book – You have to keep that mind sharp during the break. 🙂
I also created a little printable card that you can put with your gift. You just need to save the image and print away! The card prints out at 4″ x 4.”
I’m sure you noticed that I included a lot of body products in my kit. I learned so much at the Whole Foods sun care event about taking good care of my skin. They were so generous to provide us with samples and sponsor this post. The ladies that work in the body department really know their stuff! I would absolutely go back with any questions I had and feel confidant that they could give me knowledgeable answers. They also seemed passionate about what they do. It makes such a difference in the service when someone loves where they work and what they do.
We even got to talk to a few of the vendors that carry sun care products at Whole Foods. I really appreciate their commitment to providing a range of organic, fair trade, and wholesome products for me and my family. Let me tell you just a few of the things I learned. Turns out I didn’t know as much about protecting my skin from the sun as I thought!
5 Facts About Sunscreen
- There are two types of UV rays. UVA are the “aging” rays that damage and prematurely age your skin. UVB rays are what give you a sunburn. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects you from UVA and UVB rays.
- SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Let’s say that without any protection you get a sunburn in 10 minutes. If you wear a SPF 30 sunscreen, you would be protected for 30 times longer. So 10 minutes x 30 = 300 minutes until you get a sunburn. Experts recommend that everyone uses at least a 30 SPF sunscreen.
- Mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays. Zinc oxide is a mineral that contains the broadest spectrum protection. Mineral sunscreens provide protection as soon as they are applied.
- Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into your skin and actually absorb the UV rays. Chemical sunscreens take 20 minutes to become effective after they are applied.
- Chemical sunscreens can bleach coral reefs. In fact, at certain beaches around the world, you aren’t even allowed to use chemical sunscreens in order to protect the reefs.
Whole Foods has a great promotion coming up to help you great ready for some fun in the sun. From May 23, – May 26, 2014 you can get 30% off Sun Care products at Whole Foods! Yippee! You can find the products that I included in my summer survival kit plus a whole lot more.
Where any of those sunscreen facts news to you? I know I’ll be doing some more research and reading lots of labels from here on out.
