Happy Halloween! I’m excited to officially review the kids costume choices for 2013. I think themed costumes are a lot of fun, but they are definitely to the age where they want to pick their own costumes. I’m totally okay with that. It actually makes it easier on me. Finding themes they can both agree on would be a huge challenge.
So may I present, a butterfly and Steve (from Minecraft).
Butterfly:
Here are some of the details on the butterfly costume. We bought the wings from Target, but everything else I made myself.
- Ruffle dress: I used this tutorial for a ruffled maxi dress and shortened it to about knee length.
- Antennae: I took a headband that we had and wrapped/glue giant chenille stems to it. I glued the orange puff balls to the end to coordinate the orange in the wings. Both the chenille stem and the puffs came from Hobby Lobby.
- Butterfly Mask: I put a fair amount of work into designing the mask, so I will be sharing a full tutorial on that soon. It was made with glitter felt and rhinestones.
- Tights: In the top picture, you can see the pink and black striped tights. I scored those at Joanns for only $2.
- Lighted Bucket: Here is the link, so you can see the instructions for the DIY Light-up Trick or Treat bucket
Minecraft Steve
- Head: I found this tutorial on for making the head and we followed it pretty closely. We had the Steve head design printed on 11×17 paper so we had only a few pieces to worry with. To keep the box securely on his head, I used hot glue to secure a headband inside. It works surprisingly well.
- Shirt: I found the shirt at Dollar Tree. What a find!
- Pants: Target – Thank goodness that colorful pants are now in style for boys. It made my life so much easier. Plus he can continue to wear them after Halloween.
- Sword: We were going to DIY the sword, but decided that it was worth it to purchase instead. You can buy a Foam Minecraft Sword on Amazon.
- TNT Trick or Treat bag: I designed and sewed the bag out of felt. I’ll be sharing a full tutorial for the bag soon.
What are your little munchkins going as for Halloween? Or even better, what is your costume? Leave me a comment. I’d love to hear about it.

Oh my gosh, how cute is that Minecraft costume??? You did such a great job with that AND the butterfly. Adorable. I went to an office party as a super geeky Lt Commander Data dressed as Sherlock Holmes. What can I say, I love Star Trek TNG! Most people just thought I was Star Trek, though.

*Sherlock, not Star Trek, haha.
