Today’s post is dedicated to my father, Kim Bennett, who passed away very unexpectedly on October 1, 2014. He was an active Boy Scout in his youth, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He supported the Boy Scouts of America his whole life and was so excited when he finally had a grandson that was old enough to participate in Cub Scouts as well.
We’ve been dealing with some heavy stuff at my house with the passing of my father. I want to thank the Motherhood and the Boy Scouts of America for allowing me to write this sponsored post late and giving me the opportunity to tell you about why my family loves Boy Scouts so much.
I have a pretty typical almost 9 year old by today’s standards. He loves technology, a lot. He loves to play and run and be outside, but if left to his own devices he would park it front of the computer all day playing Minecraft. I feel like learning technology is an important skill especially in today’s world and we aren’t about to throw out our screens anytime soon. However, my main goal as a parent is to raise a balanced, productive, and self-reliant member of society. Boy Scouts has done so much in the last year to help my son learn and grow. The Boy Scout law states that a scout is: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Those are all characteristics that I would love for my son to develop.
When my son is at Scouts, I know he isn’t really thinking about how this is helping him grow as a person. He is thinking about how much fun he is having! Scouting is so much fun for him and his den(troop) meeting is the highlight of his week. Boy Scouts of America(BSA) has started the Build an Adventure campaign which features fun and diverse adventures for youth and demonstrates that Scouting builds a solid foundation of character, values, and education that will stay with them throughout adulthood.
His very favorite scouting activity so far has been Day Camp. During the summer, he went to camp 8 hours a day, for 3 days. They did activities like archery, swimming, BB guns, STEM activities, sports, and more. He loved all the activities but his favorite was just being with his den and creating friendships and memories with his fellow scouts.
Scout troops do a lot of the activities together but there are also lots of opportunities for families to be involved. My Father took my scout up to the lake to learn all about fish and fishing. This was an elective activity and they had so much fun together. He learned how to identify different kinds of fish, bait a hook, cast, and reel in a fish. I’m so grateful that my son had this special experience and opportunity to make memories with his grandparents.
I think any parent recognizes that the time we get with our children is so fleeting. We have a limited amount of time to teach them before they are forced out into the world. I have seen my son grow so much with his self confidence as well as the skills he has learned. I just can’t recommend Boy Scouts enough.
Wayne Brock, the Chief Scout Execute said, “Through the Build an Adventure campaign, we are demonstrating that choosing to put a child in Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts today is part of the foundation that can help him reach his full potential and become a successful adult. Scouting truly makes the most of the little time parents have to make a positive impact on their children.”
I just couldn’t agree more. We are approaching the end of our first year in Boy Scouts and I can’t wait to see all the adventures that are coming up next!
Here’s a great little video short that sums it all up.
