The cell phone situation in our house has recently been thrown into flux. My husband had always had a work provided cell phone and we learned that will be discontinued soon. I am on a family plan with some extended members of the family which I have loved but that does lack a certain amount of control since I am not the primary account holder. My kids are also getting to the age where they are involved in more activities where I am not present. I am not an advocate of young kids having cell phones of their own but there has been a few times where I felt it might be nice if my son had a way to contact me directly. All this to say it was time to start exploring cell phone carriers and plans.
I had the opportunity to go into Walmart and meet with a Walmart Family Mobile representative to learn about the plans that Walmart offers. Confession time, I do not like asking for help in a store. I will wander around for 20 minutes before I ask someone for help. I was prepared to be anxious and awkward at this meeting. I was also prepared for the hard sell, it is their job to sell phones after all. I was so pleasantly surprised. My Walmart Family Mobile representative was so nice and friendly, he immediately put me at ease. He also really listened to my needs and made thoughtful and appropriate suggestions for me. He was not interested in signing me up for the most expensive plan or the most expensive phone. It was so nice to feel like I had an ally when finding the right phone and plan.
I met with the Walmart Family Mobile rep in the Walmart Wireless store. If your store has a Wireless site, it is located at the front of the store. No worries if your Walmart doesn’t have a Wireless site, you can still find the Walmart Family Mobile products in the Electronics section.
My Walmart Family Mobile rep uses the plan and phones himself. He was very knowledgeable about the network coverage as well as the different phone’s capabilities. Let me tell you about some of the things I learned during my conversation.
- Walmart Family Mobile is a no contract phone. Meaning you don’t have to sign a 3 year contract and risk fees for cancellation.
- The plans are post-paid. You get a bill at the end of the month for your service instead of paying upfront.
- The plans are affordable. The first line is $29.88 for Unlimited Talk, Text & Data service plan which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data. I rarely go over 1 GB of data, so this is perfect for my usage. You can upgrade plans to include additional data.
- Additional lines can be added at a discounted rate.
- You can bring your phone number over from your current carrier.

I really liked what I learned at the Walmart Wireless store and I ended up purchasing a phone and signing up for the plan. I went with the LG G Stylo. My personal requirements that the phone have 4G LTE capabilities and the latest version of the Android operating system. With all the social media and blogging activities I do on my phone, I really appreciated the large screen and stylus that comes with the G Stylo. The Dual Window option is a real plus for me. With a large screen, having two apps open at the same time is totally doable. I see an increase in productivity coming.
Well, I think I’ll be more productive if I can get the phone away from the kids. They are both learning about weather and they are obsessed with checking the weather sites and then checking out the sky and seeing if they agree.
It doesn’t really matter what your budget or phone needs are. I found phones on the Walmart Family Mobile plan that could meet just about everyone’s needs. I probably wouldn’t send my 9 year old off with a smart phone, but there are some very affordable basic phones. I saw a flip phone for as low as $19.88. Perfect for getting in touch with Mom if necessary.
