I posted the Minecraft cake that I made for my son’s birthday and now it is time to tell you about the rest of the party. A while back I heard of coding classes at Codakid. They teach kid computer programming principles through programming Minecraft mods. They also offer birthday parties. I can’t wait to tell you all about Codakid, the Minecraft party favors I made, and of course the Minecraft Birthday Party invitations.
The concept at Codakid is genius. Codakid has code-a-thons every weekend where kids can go for 2 hours and create a Minecraft mod. They have so many mod options that you can pretty much guarantee you won’t repeat a mod. My son went to a code-a-thon and he was totally hooked. They also offer longer courses that meet a few hours once a week. We haven’t tried one of those yet, but we’re hoping to soon. This is such a fun, unique, and not to mention educational birthday party idea. I paid for the party 100% out of my pocket, so any opinions about Codakid are strictly my own. This post does contain affiliate links. That means that if you purchase products from the links I get a small percentage back to support the cost of running this blog.
I’ll get to the party in a second, but first we needed some invitations. I found a Minecraft wallpaper I liked and then found Steve at a computer. I worked some Photoshop magic and combined them. I knew that most of the parents would be unfamiliar with Codakid so I tried to be pretty specific and included the website so they could look into it. I had the image printed as a 5×7 photo and that was that.
The party is booked for 2 hours and making the mod takes about 1.5 hours. The kids are programming in a classroom, and the party elements were set-up in the common area. Normally 12 kids would be in a larger classroom but we had some RSVP issues so put everyone at this table. I actually liked that the kids were all around the same table, it made it easier for them to interact with each other. As for the mod itself, my son picked a mob bomb. The kids write some code and also do the graphics for the mod. No prior coding experience is required although the website says it is helpful if the child can type about 10 words a minute. We had some that probably couldn’t meet that threshold, but don’t worry, everyone leaves with a mod.
Codakid also has the “Boat room” which has different video game consoles and games. The kids played in there before and after the coding. If you have kids not interested in coding, they can play in the boat room the whole time. Up to 8 kids can play at a time.
I kept the party details pretty simple since coding the mod was taking up the majority of the party time. There is a kitchen in the middle of Codakid, so we set up on the bar.
We had the TNT cake as the centerpiece. I also made some fun TNT lollipops. Whenever I see a cube, my mind immediately jumps to, “How can I turn this into something from Minecraft?” I found these old fashioned cinnamon lollipops and TNT seemed the obvious choice. The cinnamon even makes them a little hot. I displayed them in my lollipop holder and kids could take them as they went through the line.
We served mini bundt cakes instead of cupcakes. They were store bought and the kids gave them rave reviews. They weren’t specifically Minecraft related, but I feel like the red and chocolate fit in well with the whole scheme pretty well. I did learn that 10 year olds are a hungry bunch. I needed a lot more food. Normally I go way overboard and have tons leftover. I’m still working on balance I guess.
My favorite part of the party was the “goody bags.” I found some Design Your Own Travel mugs and I made a creeper travel mug for each kid. Originally I was going to personalize them, but the relative lack of timely RSVP’s meant that I kept them generic. Then inside each cup there was a Minecraft minifigure. I bought the three packs and just dropped on in each cup. Each kid also got a 8 GB USB flash drive. The kids need a flash drive to bring their mods home. I thought it would make a fun party favor, so give them the flash drive. I also thought it would be easier than expecting each kid to bring their own flash drive from home. They don’t need anywhere near 8 GB of space, but we found an awesome deal on Amazon by purchasing in bulk. I think each flash drive was about $2.25 .
I really wanted the coding activity to be the star of the birthday party and I really feel like it was. We had a wide range of experience too. Some kids had never played Minecraft all the way up to my son and one other boy that had been to Codakid before. The kids would have loved to stay for hours. If time had permitted they were going to set up a server so all the kids could multi-player together. It turns out the mob bomb was a slightly more advanced mod and so they really had to hustle to get it done and still have time for birthday activities.
If you are interested in taking classes or throwing a birthday, you can check out the Codakid website for more information. Codakid is located in Scottsdale, Arizona and they also have a some classes in Chandler, Arizona. My understanding is that parties are only booked at the Scottsdale location. I had kids and parents alike telling me how fun this was. My son had a blast and loved his birthday party. It was a huge success and I would recommend Codakid to anyone.
Don’t forget to check out the Minecraft TNT Rice Crispy Cake I made.
I’d love you to share this post with your friends, or leave me a comment telling me what your favorite part of the party was. Thanks for reading!

I like the whole Minecraft theme! My son is a huge Minecraft fan. I don’t think I would do the whole computer video game thing, I rather have the running around doing different games but it would still be fun to do this with him alone.
