Friday afternoon I decided to take a break from the official ‘to-do’ list and experiment with an idea that has been kicking around my head for awhile. A week or two back I found these fur trimmed knee socks at the Dollar Tree. I forgot to take a before picture, but they look just like these ones.
I thought it would be awesome to take them and turn them into ‘baby-legs’ style stockings for my almost 3 year old. The idea was to snip off the foot and then have the fur trim at the ankle. Essentially she would be wearing them upside down.
Problem is that I don’t think Ms Foxy would keep leg warmers on. If she can get it off, she likes to take it off. The solution needs to be leggings of some sort.
I hit the internet looking for bloomer or diaper cover tutorials. The best one I found was of course from Dana of MADE. She is my sewing hero.
Sorry I don’t have pictures of the process. I had no idea if it was going to turn out or not.
Here is what I ended up doing:
1. Make Dana’s Diaper cover as shown but do not make a casing and finish the legs. I used an old red t-shirt that was in my scrap pile for the diaper cover.
2. Cut the knee socks off at the ankle.
3. Pin the cut-end of the sock to the bloomer leg opening with the right sides together.
4. Using a zig-zag stitch, sew the sock to the bloomer leg stretching the sock to fit the size of the leg opening.
I thought I should add this disclaimer. I never intend on her wearing these without a dress or skirt of some type on top.
Here it is paired with that Circle Skirt I made using another one of Dana’s patterns. She is ready to rock it at a fun Christmas party, or join Santa on Christmas Eve delivering presents to all the good boys and girls!
If there is some interest, I can put together a step by step photo tutorial. Just let me know. It will give me an excuse to get her another pair of knee socks! 🙂
