Today I am showing you the sewing machine cover I made, but first a little back story:
I got a sewing machine nearly 7 years ago which definitely does the job but I really only have the ability to do a straight stitch or zig-zag. As I got more into reading craft blogs I read about all the cool things fancy machines could do and I really hoped one day I could upgrade my machine.
Then one day about a year ago I was out at yard sale and I scored a Brother VX-970 for $15! It is definitely an older machine, but it has a lot more options than my newer, simpler White machine. The asking price was $20 but when I told them the accessory table was missing, they knocked it down to $15. Wahoo! (The accessory table is that L-shaped piece that you take off to change the bobbin and whatnot.)
Shamefully I have only used it a few times. Sewing without an accessory table is actually a lot harder than I imagined. I finally just coughed up the $22 for a new accessory table and now she is whole again!
Now that she is back in tip top shape, I am planning to bring her along to the Singer sewing party. 16 people sharing one machine to sew a project sounds a little cuckoo to me!
All of that back story so that I can tell you I made a sewing machine cover for the old gal!
I found a great tutorial over at Make It and Love It, which I tweaked slightly.
The original tutorial put ribbon tie’s on both ends of the sewing machine. I decided to have the ribbon wrap all the way around the cover and tie only on the one end.
I put the hemmed cover on my sewing machine and simply pinned where I wanted the ribbon to go. From there I simply did a straight edge along each side of the ribbon.
I am in LOVE with this fabric. It is outdoor upholstery fabric. It was in the red tag fabric section of Joanns for $3/yard. The turquoise and gray just make me swoon. I also like the extra detail that the putting the ribbon on the outside added. As I was taking pictures, this one stuck out to me. I think it looks like my sewing machine is wearing a bonnet. After I noticed that, I have been calling her “the old gal” ever since.
Now the old gal won’t have to go to the Sewing House party naked. That would just be uncouth!
Speaking of the Singer Sewing House Party, I have been pinning ideas for simple sewing projects on my Pinterest account. If you have never heard of Pinterest, it is essentially visual social bookmarking. It is addicting too! If you are on Pinterest, leave me your username I’d love to check out your boards. Predictably enough, mine is cuteasafox. 🙂

I’ve been seeing alot of machine covers on flickr and want to make one for my daughter. I really like the fabric you used and the measuring tape ribbon is darling. Great job!
PS. I am with you about wanting a new machine that does more. My Singer that I use all the time stopped doing zig-zag…. that means no more button holes or anything~ I do have a freebie I can use for that but like the Singer more. Have a great day!

Cute idea. I like the simplicity of it. I saw your photo on just something I whipped up. If I blog this tutorial I’ll link to you. I teach sewing and sometimes we have to share but I wouldn’t recommend sharing your machine because people who don’t know how to sew sometimes pull at the fabric messing up the machines timing!

Visiting from TipJunkie’s Tip Me Tuesday. Very cute cover! I bought a sewing machine about 12 years ago and have shamefully used it only a handful of times. I know how. Just don’t have the want-to or the time. So my machine sits quietly in a box in my basement. Maybe one day I’ll bring it out and teach my daughter how to use it. 🙂

I like this! I need to make a cover for my machine, and this one is simple and still allows a bit of the machine to show. Thank you!
