March 14, or 3/14 is a day for all math nerds to rejoice because it’s Pi Day! Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is an irrational number which means it can’t be expressed as a simple fraction. 3.14 is the first three digits of Pi, but it goes on forever.
Pi Day is a fun way to get kids excited about math as well as to eat some pie! I’m not a pie maker so I looked to Marie Callender’s to help me out this year with the pies. I picked up a banana cream pie for dessert as well as some savory pies to eat throughout the day.
I’m planning to serve the banana cream pie with a pi symbol in caramel sauce. Yummy! I have to say that I really love the Marie Callender’s Banana Cream Pie. It tasted great with a lot of real banana flavor. I love how easy it is to prepare. You simply defrost in the refrigerator over night. If you only want to serve a slice or two, you can defrost just a few slices in the refrigerator and leave the rest of the pie frozen for later.
In addition to eating pie, I am trying to put together some fun activities to do with the kids. Here are some of the fun ideas I found:
- Watch The Mathmatical Pi Song – It’s a cute video about Pi.
- Listen to the Pi Song – a catchy song which recites Pi
- The Marie Callender’s blog has some fun ideas for celebrating Pi Day
- Write a Pi-ku. Instead of a traditional haiku a Pi-ku follows a 3-1-4 syllable pattern. Here is a quick example:
Pi Day is
Fun
When you eat pie. - Create art with circles
- Here is a fun website with a bunch of silly Pi songs to sing.
- Don’t eat the Paste has some cute Pi Day printables
Marie Callender’s is offering a great coupon for $1.50 off any frozen pie. The coupon is available untilo March 21, 2013 and expires March 31, 2013.
Will you be doing anything special for Pi Day?
