My son recently finished his first soccer season. We are a little late on the organized sports band wagon, but it was pretty fun. At the very first meeting, they asked for a volunteer for “Team Mom” and no one was stepping up. I hate awkward silences, so I volunteered. I discovered there was a reason that no one was volunteering, I did a lot of work!
One of my responsibilities was to plan the end of season party. The party was super simple, so I’m not really going to any details on that. However, I just couldn’t resist the idea of making soccer ball decorated cookies.
I am not very artistic, and I knew that drawing pentagons freehand was out of the question. I found this Soccer Imprint Cookie Cutter on Amazon that imprints the lines for you. It was a great starting point. I suggest reading the reviews on Amazon, there are some great tips in there.
This is only my second time decorating cookies with royal icing and I almost chucked them in the trash a few times. Things started out well enough, but my dough was a little too thick and so the indents were very deep.
Consequently, when I went to fill in with white, it completely covered over my black lines. Sorry no pictures of that, I was really ready to scrap the whole thing at that point. My husband talked me down and suggested I outline in black again, on top of the white. It was an extra step, but I felt like they made the cookies presentable. You can see above that they aren’t perfect, but they look like soccer balls. I’m calling it a win!
Here’s the moral of the story, you are your own worst critic. My lines weren’t straight, and the icing was uneven in parts, but the kids and even the adults loved them. The coach was shocked that I had made them. I’m a rookie cookie decorator, but I’m going to keep at it. I would encourage you to try something new and if you aren’t perfect the first time, keep trying!
In fact, I volunteered to do up some decorated cookies for my sister’s bridal shower. I’m hoping the third time’s the charm!
I want to mention that I really liked the cookie cutter, even though I had a hard time with the decorating. It was all user error on that one!
