My family had so much fun with this. We stopped in to the Dollar General and purchased Chocolate Chip, Gingerbread, and Pumpkin Spice cookie mixes. I’m going to keep it real and tell you that I really love the ease and convenience of the cookie mixes. Most mixes only require an additional ingredient or two like a stick of better and an egg. The cookies are delicious too!
The kids loved helping out with the cookies. They especially loved how good the house smelled after baking the gingerbread cookies.
After the cookies are completely cooled, you can move on to decorating them. I wanted to stick with some simple decorating techniques that the kids would enjoy doing. I also knew that the cookies would need to be stacked on a plate, so I wanted a sturdy design. That’s why we decided to do a sugar cookie glaze that hardens. It’s much easier to make and use than royal icing, but it dries hard so the cookies are stackable!
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ¼ tsp Vanilla extract
- 1-2 Tbsp Water
- 1 Tbsp Light Corn Syrup
- Food Color
- Mix the powdered sugar, vanilla, and 1 Tbsp Water. Mix it the best you can, it will be very thick.
- Add the corn syrup and mix.
- If the glaze is too thick, add water a small amount at a time, up to 1 Tbsp of water. The thinner the glaze the more it will spread and run. For these cookies I preferred a thick consistency.
- Add small amounts of food coloring and stir until the desired color is reached.
- If you find the glaze is thinner than you like, add more powdered sugar.
- Spoon a small amount of glaze onto the cookie and use the back of the spoon to spread it around.
- Decorate the cookie as desired.
- Let the glaze dry completely. The thicker the glaze, the longer the drying time.
The snowflake cookies were blue color glaze with snowflake sprinkles. After the glaze dried, I added some blue edible glitter for extra sparkle.
The Christmas Light Cookies were a lot of fun. We used both green licorice string and a green candy writer to make a line. Then we added Christmas light sprinkles. You can do straight lines or a big tangled mess. Personally, I like the tangle of lights.
After we got the cookies all ready to go, we printed out the cute tags available on the Betty Crocker site and got ready to deliver our goodies. Make sure you grab the gift tags and the door hanger. The door hanger has some directions so your goody recipients can keep the fun going and continue to #SpreadCheer. Make sure you post on social media with the hashtag #SpreadCheer so you can get in on the fun.
We put our cookies in bags that could hang off a door knob. This way if they aren’t home, the cookies aren’t sitting on the ground!
Guess what? It’s time for you to spread some cheer and win some cash for doing it! Well technically it’s a $20 Paypal card, but that’s just about the same as cash!
