I had the pleasure of seeing a complimentary press screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 earlier this week. I’m so excited that I get to tell you about it and show you this shirt I designed to commemorate the movie’s release on May 5, 2017. I’m going to keep this review spoiler free so forgive me for not going too in depth about any one topic.
Here’s the synopsis: Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand. I went with the official synopsis so I didn’t accidentally include any spoilers.
First of all, I loved the movie. It was absolutely hilarious and surprisingly touching. I have not laughed so hard in a movie theater in a long time. Even if the dialogue wasn’t making you laugh, Drax’s(Dave Bautista) infectious laugh absolutely would have you cracking up.
Baby Groot is so dang cute. He definitely lives up to all of the hype. I feel like in this movie you got to see a little more in depth about each of the Guardians and see maybe a little different side of them. To be honest, I don’t really expect a whole lot of character development from a “super hero” movie, but I loved that I got it. Yondu(Michael Rooker) also gets more screentime in this film which I ended up being pretty happy about.
As for new characters in the film, I really liked Mantis. At first her antennae and big eyes creeped me out a bit, but in the end, she won me over. I was loving Kurt Russel in the film too! He was one of my favorite actors growing up, so it was perfect that he was in this movie that has so much nostalgia.
Oh and the music! I’m a little too young for these songs to have been popular when I was a teenager but I definitely recognized and loved many of them. Get the soundtrack, you’ll love it!
Is this a kid friendly movie? I’m going to say no on this one. It’s rated PG-13 and frankly, I think 13 is a reasonable age. We are on the more conservative side when it comes to media, but my 11 and 9-year-old will not be seeing this one for a few more years to come. The language(multiple usages of a few words that start with D come to mind right off the bat) and innuendos made the decision for me.
I’m Mary Poppins Y’all!
Now it’s craft time! One of the funniest lines in the movie is when Yondu says, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” Sorry, but I’m not going to give you more context than that. You are just going to have to trust me. Go see the movie, and then you’ll be coming back here because you NEED this shirt!
I designed this shirt as a mash-up between Guardians of The Galaxy and Mary Poppins. Yondu doesn’t hold an umbrella in the movie, but I thought it made the Mary Poppins reference make more sense. I’m notoriously awful at movie quotes so as soon as I heard in the theater, I started digging through my purse for a receipt and pen to make sure I wouldn’t forget!

- T-Shirt
- Heat Transfer Vinyl
- Cutting machine such as a Cutting machine or Cutting machine
- Yondu “I’m Mary Poppins Y’all” design (see below)
Directions:
- Download the Cutting machine from my google drive. You can also download the PNG file below if you would like.
- Measure your shirt and decide how big you want your design.
- Cut the design out of Heat Transfer Vinyl. I used a blue and a gray but you can do whatever colors you like.
Don’t forget to flip your design horizontally so you are cutting a mirror image! - I use a PowerPress heat press to do my shirts and I LOVE it. If you don’t have a heat press, you can do it with an iron. Just make sure you put as much pressure on the iron as possible. Press as hard as you can, and then press a little harder. Ha!
- Press the design on your shirt. Immediately remove the clear carrier sheet.
- Now you have the coolest shirt in the galaxy!
Don’t forget to head out to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this weekend. You’ll have a great time. Let me know if you make a Yondu Mary Poppins shirt, I’d love to see it!
Who’s your favorite character in Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the Marvel Universe? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
