Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you are probably aware that The Last Jedi hits theaters today! I love the franchise and I’ve seen all the movies but I’m not exactly the type that would be cleaning up at Star Wars trivia night. Just so you know what level of fandom we’re starting with here. I was invited to see a pre-screening of the movie in exchange for posting my review.
This is a spoiler-free review, so no worries about ruining your experience!
Spoiler free reviews are actually pretty difficult to write because I want to tell you about all the really cool stuff and exciting plot points. Trust me there were a ton! There were several times in the movie where I felt like we had hit the climax of the film and things were going to wrap up when, Bam! something else happens and we’re right back in the thick of it. It was awesome!
There was action, adventure, and of course lightsabers. The thing that kind of took me by surprise was just how many females in the movie that were strong, independent, and just plain kick-butt. It really starts from the beginning. I was immediately struck by seeing numerous female fighter pilots. It was purposeful and not pandering.
All of these strong female characters really felt right and like they should be there, not just like it was the PC thing to do. This film is such a long way from Princess Leia in a bikini and I LOVED it. It was bittersweet to see Carrie Fisher as General Organa. I loved her role so much, but sad to know that she has passed on. It definitely brought on the nostalgia everytime she was on screen.
My favorite new character in this film was Kelly Marie Tran. I think we’ll be seeing and hearing a ton more from her in the future. She totally killed it as Rose Tico in the Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is really accessible to all levels of Star Wars fan and I absolutely recommend it. I can’t wait to take back my 10 and 12 year old. They’ve seen The Force Awakens and they’re going to love that The Last Jedi picks right up where that one left off.
Two thumbs up and a great way to spend the weekend as a family!
